A lot of people are turned off by Godard’s work by what’s on the surface and by Godard himself. He comes off as beyond pretentious, narcissistic, and severely offensive at times. He is also completely detached from today’s world, which gives him a great vantage point to critique it. Godard gives us a critical essay that we can agree and disagree with, but it a view that deserves to be listened to and questioned. Every subject today comes with two opposite and preplanned viewpoints, we rarely stop and think about the pros and cons for ourselves, but merely start arguing the pros and cons that we’ve heard. Godard’s views run perpendicular to the normal commentary which is why I personally believe is the reason that looking at one of his films physically feels so different from watching other movies. You instantly start questioning what you’re watching, whether you’re questioning if it’s right, why’s it’s so boring or horrible, why it’s so great, etc. it’s still an active participation in an artistic medium. As for Godard the person? Show me a well adjusted human who directs and I’ll show you a bad film.
